"Leave No Child Behind"
Workshop Series |
|
|
|
Signed into law on January 8, 2002, the
No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is “the most sweeping reform of the
Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) since ESEA was enacted
in 1965.” Unfortunately, this important and powerful legislation
threatens to sweep up many schools and students right along with the
reforms it is designed to implement. So we’ve designed a unique set
of workshops to help teachers and students deal effectively with the
pressures and performance goals of this rigorous and complicated
policy. |

Leave No Reading Behind |
|
What are the key elements struggling readers need to succeed? And
how can those elements be taught in ways that are both efficient
and effective? Those are the two key questions we answer in this
workshop. Too often, kids who fall behind — or start out behind to
begin with — end up being left behind simply because we aren’t
able to focus on their unique needs. In this workshop, we’ll look
at key aspects of efficient assessment that help us identify key
instructional goals. Then we’ll identify the strategies we need to
address those goals quickly and completely. We’ll look at more
efficient approaches to phonemic awareness and early sound-symbol
instruction, and the quickest ways to improve comprehension and
fluency. We’ll also look at key test taking skills to make sure
that the improvements students show in the classroom show up in
your test results as well. |

Leave No Math Behind |
|
Because of its highly cumulative nature, kids who start off slow
in math tend to stay slow — or get even slower — as time goes by.
How do you break this cycle? How do you catch kids up in less than
one year to get them ready for tests that seem many years beyond
their ability level? In this workshop, we’ll look at some of the
common problems kids have with math and the key strategies we can
use to help them make up for lost time by ending their confusion
and helping them build the confidence they need to master skills
quickly. |

Leave No School Behind |
|
For most of us, teaching is an individual sport: we go into our
rooms, close our doors, and teach the best way we know how. But
insuring that large groups of diverse learners consistently meet
the requirements of Adequate Yearly Progress is a school-wide
issue that takes teamwork and planning. Based on a unique and
proven model for successful organizational change, this workshop
will help your school define clear goals and identify the
practices, policies, and procedures you need to achieve them. |
